CCT on Charlotte Talks – New Federal Guidelines On Housing Policy And Criminal Records
CCT’s Executive Director, Myra Clark, joined other expert guests on the radio show, Charlotte Talks, on April 19th to discuss recently released federal guidelines on housing policy and criminal records. Two of the most important factors to successful reentry from prison are housing and employment. Unfortunately, many of our clients face an uphill battle when trying to find adequate housing, because so many landlords will not rent to individuals with criminal records. The new guidelines seek to alleviate this problem somewhat,?stating that a blanket ban on tenants with criminal records could violate certain housing discrimination laws, and providing suggestions to landlords on how to navigate vetting tenants who may have criminal records. Charlotte Talks discusses different sides of this issue, and the possible ramifications of the new guidelines.
